DETROIT, July 27 (UPI) — The National Law Employment Project said U.S. employers are frequently restricting job applicants to only those already employed.
Over a four-week stretch, the advocacy program found 150 job ads online that stipulated applicants already have a job, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.
NELP scanned job listing Web sites CareerBuilder, Indeed, Monster and Craigslist, the newspaper said.
For those unemployed and seeking work, the exclusion is a low blow. “It’s the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my life. I was told I had to have worked the last six consecutive months to apply. It makes you feel totally worthless,” said Dave Ellcey, whose application was refused by a Kalamazoo, Mich., company, where he applied to work as a machine operator.
The assumption behind such ads is that the out-of-work employee did something wrong in order to find himself or herself out of work. But that is not necessarily the case.
“The thinking is that someone is not working because they are unreliable or got fired for a reason, when the reality is they were terrific employees who lost jobs at companies that couldn’t weather the economy turmoil,” said Donald Conlon, a professor at Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business.</……….. continues on UPI.com.
